Off the southern tip of mainland Florida, more than 800 low-lying coral islands arc southwest through pool-blue waters. Here, U.S. Hwy. 1 becomes the Overseas Highway, a thread of pavement tracing a thin line over a series of bridges, luring you toward the tropics.
Green-and-white mile-marker signs countdown the distance to road's end at Key West. They also provide the only directions you'll really need on these skinny specks of land; many businesses list their address simply as the nearest mile marker, or MM.
You'll pass 126 of those markers on your way to Key West. Sure, you could drive it in a day. But you have each other and beguiling tropical islands beckoning you off the mainland map. So kick off your shoes and succumb to the languid pleasures of the Florida Keys. |
